Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue

Targeted Instrument-Assisted Therapies to Break Down Chronic Scar Tissue

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), which includes the renowned Graston Technique and therapeutic cupping, is an advanced, evidence-based process used by our Physical and Occupational Therapists. By utilizing specially designed, medical-grade handheld instruments, our clinicians can precisely locate and systematically break down dense scar tissue, deep adhesions, and fascial restrictions within your muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves.

These localized restrictions and adhesions typically develop as a direct result of past surgical procedures, prolonged periods of immobilization, or chronic repetitive strain injuries. By applying targeted pressure with the instruments, the therapist introduces controlled microtrauma to the restricted area, which safely stimulates a local inflammatory response, initiates the reabsorption of excessive scar tissue, and triggers the body's natural regenerative healing mechanisms to restore pain-free movement.

Questions

Find answers to what matters most about your care.

What does IASTM stand for and what does it involve?

IASTM stands for Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Massage. It is a therapeutic process where a therapist uses specialized handheld instruments—including Graston tools and cupping—to break down internal scar tissue and fascial restrictions.

How do IASTM tools help find and treat soft tissue issues?

The specialized tools allow the therapist to feel and locate deep-tissue restrictions. Once found, the tools are used to introduce controlled microtrauma to the area, which effectively restarts the body's local healing response.

Why does this technique cause a local inflammatory response?

The controlled microtrauma intentionally stimulates a localized inflammatory response, which is necessary to initiate the reabsorption of excessive scar tissue and accelerate the body's natural healing process.

What causes the soft tissue adhesions that these tools target?

Adhesions and restrictions within the soft tissue typically develop as a result of surgical procedures, prolonged periods of immobilization, or repetitive strain injuries from daily activities.

What is the ultimate goal of combining Graston, IASTM, and cupping?

The primary goal of these combined techniques is to completely break down painful tissue restrictions and internal adhesions, directly allowing the patient to reduce pain and regain full physical function.
