Craniofacial Pain & TMJ

Comprehensive Care for Jaw Dysfunction, Clicking, and Facial Discomfort

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and complex craniofacial pain can severely impact your daily quality of life, making essential everyday tasks like chewing, speaking, laughing, or yawning painful. At Peak Physical Therapy, our specialized treatments address these complex issues by evaluating and treating both the head and neck simultaneously, ensuring that both the localized jaw joints and the supporting cervical muscles are balanced.

Whether your jaw symptoms appeared suddenly due to a traumatic event—such as whiplash from a car accident or a physical blow from contact sports like boxing, soccer, or hockey—or have built up gradually over years due to teeth grinding and stress, we can help. Our licensed physical therapists combine specialized manual therapies, joint manipulations, and functional dry needling with custom relaxation exercises, often working hand-in-hand with your dentist's oral appliance to restore perfect jaw alignment.

Questions

Find answers to what matters most about your care.

What is TMD and what are its most common signs?

TMD stands for Temporomandibular Disorder, which is the medical term for jaw pain and dysfunction. Common signs include frequent headaches, neck and shoulder pain, clicking or popping in the jaw, difficulty chewing or yawning, teeth grinding, worn-down teeth, and jaw stiffness.

What causes the sudden or gradual onset of jaw and craniofacial pain?

Many patients live with minor jaw alignment issues for years before they become painful enough to seek help. However, TMD can also strike suddenly due to physical trauma, such as a blow to the head, face, neck, or mouth.

What exactly does "craniofacial pain" refer to and what areas can it affect?

Craniofacial pain refers to any discomfort located in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) as well as the broader facial, head, and neck regions. This includes related issues like sinus pain, ear pain, jaw clicking, and chronic headaches.

How does Peak physical therapy successfully treat jaw disorders?

TMD is best treated by addressing the head and neck at the same time. Our physical therapists treat both the affected muscles and joints using hands-on manual therapy, specialized relaxation techniques, and specific therapeutic exercises, often working in conjunction with a patient's dental appliance.

Who can benefit most from specialized craniofacial and TMJ therapy?

This therapy benefits individuals recovering from facial surgeries, people suffering from whiplash or head injuries due to car accidents, and athletes in contact sports that cause frequent head and face trauma—such as boxing, mixed martial arts, soccer, lacrosse, and hockey.
